What is Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete (GRC)

Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete, also known as GFRC or GRC, is a type of fibre reinforced concrete. Glass Fibre Reinforced Concretes are mainly used in exterior building façade panels and as architectural precast concrete. The ability of the material to be formed into virtually any size, shape or finish and it’s unique combination of high strength, low weight and environmental benefits ensure it’s growing popularity with many internationally renowned architects and engineers.

The process incorporates glass fibre reinforcement into a higher water content mix that can be either poured or sprayed into moulds, from which the product is demoulded the following day. The incorporation of fibre reinforcing into the wet-cast mix increases the tensile strength of the finished product.

Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete (GRC) is a dense cast stone product with a close face texture is achieved which can be varied by the use of secondary surface treatments. Often fibre reinforced cast stone units are produced in thin sections which reduces the weight and associated manual handling issues, and offers the opportunity, through careful design and the use of specialist fixings, for retrofitting the fibre reinforced product to the structure.

Longer lead times are required for glass fibre reinforced concrete or cast stone as the process generally yields only one cast per mould per day.

Why Amber Precast’s GRC?

Amber Precast is one of very few UK companies to supply Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete (GRC) products. With over 25 years experience in manufacturing GRC, we now supply to a number of leading housing developers including Barratt David Wilson, Bloor Homes, Crest Nicholson and many more.

GRC provides a lightweight alternative to GRP plastic or timber frames, with our most popular items being a standard range of 6 door surrounds, and as GRC can be moulded to almost any shape, we can also produce bespoke items tailor-made to your requirements such as window surrounds and heads.

Key Features of Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete (GRC)

  • GRC has the appearance of Cast Stone, yet as it’s reinforced with glass fibres, it’s typically only 30% of the weight resulting in lower transportation costs and ease of installation.
  • GRC can be post fit, so it can be stored safely at Amber Precast until your build is complete, meaning that it doesn’t impact on your critical path. Our GRC even comes with stainless steel fixings as standard.
  • Unlike timber, GRC requires no painting, treating or maintenance. We can even match the colour of your existing stonework, as demonstrated in this photo of a development for Bloor Homes, Fairford (see photo below).
